University Overview
Founded in 1898, Peking University (PKU) is the first national university in Chinese modern history. Peking University now consists of five faculties: Humanities, Social Sciences, Sciences, Medicine, and Information and Engineering. The University has 30 colleges and 12 departments, and offers 93 undergraduate programs, 199 postgraduate programs, and 173 doctoral programs.
In October 2002, there were 14,212 undergraduates, 8,119 postgraduates and 3,956 doctoral candidates. There were also on campus 1,367 long-term international students and approximately 2,600 short-term international students from 80 countries. Among them, there were 923 undergraduates and more than 2,600 students enrolled in short-term programs.
The University has 4,574 full-time faculties, of whom 1,188 are professors and 1,503 are associate professors.
The Peking University library is the largest university library in Asia, with a collection of 5.51 million books and more than 6,500 titles of Chinese and foreign journals and newspapers. The library also serves as a comprehensive modern information center.
Peking University places great importance on academic exchange and cooperation with foreign universities. She has signed agreements with more than 200 universities in 50 countries and regions.
Throughout her one hundred year history, Peking University has emphasized diligence, conscientiousness, truthfulness, and innovation, and has thus produced many outstanding graduates.
International students have the following options of study at Peking University:
(1) Undergraduate or graduate degree-granting programs;
(2) Visiting student status (non-degree granting) for one or two years;
(3) Pre-enrollment training program;
(4) Short-term language courses or Chinese studies programs.
