China Scholarship Council has completed the national statistics on international students in China for the academic year 2001. A total of 61,869 international students from 169 countries were admitted to study in 363 higher education institutions and other educational establishments in 2001, up 18.6% in comparison with the figure of year 2000.
    9.44% of them were Chinese Government Scholarship holders, others were self-financed; and about 27% engaged in degree studies in China, an increase of nearly 3,000 compared with the previous year. Their specialties covered a wide range of 11 subject areas, but liberal arts and medicine remained the most popular areas of studies.
    75% of the international students were from Asia, and 20% were from Europe and America. The number of students from Korea and Japan both exceeded 10,000 and the number of students from the United States, Indonesia, Germany, Vietnam, France and Russia exceeded 1,000 each.
    Beijing ranked the first in admitting international students among all regions, recruiting more than 20,000. Shanghai came second with about 10,000. Jiangsu, Tianjin, Liaoning, Shandong, Jilin, Zhejiang, Heilongjiang, Shananxi, Guangxi, Fujian and Henan each recruited over 1,000 international students.
    Beijing Language and Culture University and Peking University had the largest number of international students in 2001, with over 6,000 and 3,000 respectively. The other institutions which admitted more than 1,000 international students in 2001 were Fudan University, Beijing Normal University, Tsinghua University, Shanghai Jiaotong University, Zhejiang University, Nanjing University, Nanjing Normal University and Nankai University.(2002/02/19)
