APPLICATION PROCEDURES FOR SHORT-TERM SCHOLARSHIP FOR FOREIGN TEACHERS OF CHINESE LANGUAGE

The Short-term Scholarship Scheme for Foreign Teachers of Chinese Language was set up by the Ministry of Education of China to sponsor overseas full time teachers of Chinese language, with a view to improve their Chinese language teaching skills and to facilitate the cooperation and exchange in the field of Chinese language teaching among scholars from different nations. The Ministry of Education of China has entrusted the China Scholarship Council (hereinafter referred to as CSC) to administer the recruitment and the daily management of the scheme.

1. Application
The applicants may apply for the scholarship through Chinese diplomatic missions in their home country. The time for application is normally from the beginning of January to the begining of April.

2. Eligibility:
1). Applicants must be non-Chinese national, be in good health and under the age of 50.
2). Applicants must be engaged in teaching Chinese for at least three consecutive years and hold the teaching post at the present.
3). Applicants must have obtained Bachelor's degree or above.

3. Details of the Scholarship
1). ----exemption of tuition fees, basic learning materials and free accommodation.
2). ----provided with free emergency medical care service
3). ----provided with living allowance, the standard is CNY 2,000 yuan (once only)
4). ----teaching tour outside Beijing: The institution will bear the expenses of teachers' transportation, accommodation and an amount of one-off food subsidy of CNY 600 yuan

4. Time of Short-term Courses and Host Institutions
Host institutions: Beijing Language University, Beijing Normal University
The courses will be conducted from July 7th to August 18th, 2004 including
1). ---- 4 weeks of classroom instruction (July 7th to August 4th, 2004)
2). ---- 2 weeks of teaching tour outside Beijing (August 5thto August 18th, 2004)

5. Course Arrangements and Teaching Tour
1). Course arrangements:
The course contents include the phonetics, grammar and lexicon in teaching Chinese as a second and foreign language, related teaching contents and methodology, the teaching of oral Chinese, listening comprehension, and reading comprehension, the theory and approach of classroom Chinese teaching, Chinese upgrading courses, lectures on Chinese culture, teaching practice.
2). Teaching tour :
A two-week teaching tour will be arranged by the host institution after the classroom instruction:
The route for this year will be: Beijing--Tai'an, Qufu (Shandong Province)--Nanjing (Jiangsu Province)--Hangzhou, Shaoxing (Zhejiang province)--Shanghai.

6. Application Materials
The applicants must fill in and provide the following materials truly and correctly.
1). Application Form for Short-term Scholarship for Foreign Teachers of Chinese Language (printed by CSC), one original, one photocopy, have to be filled in Chinese.
2). Highest diploma (notarized photocopy). Documents in languages other than Chinese or English must be attached with translations in Chinese or in English.
3). Two letters of recommendation by the president of the institution or professor engaged in Chinese teaching respectively. Documents in languages other than Chinese or English must be attached with translations in Chinese or in English.
4). Documents of being at post of Chinese teaching; documents in languages other than Chinese or English must be attached with translations in Chinese or in English.
5). Study plan written in Chinese (no less than 400 words).
Applicants shall submit the above application materials to CSC via the Chinese diplomatic missions which will transfer them by April 30th 2004.

7. Approval and Notification
CSC will review the application materials before forwarding them to relevant institutions for admission. CSC will send the Confirmation of Short-term Scholarship for Foreign Teachers of Chinese Language, Admission Notice and Visa Application Form for Study in China (JW 201) to the relevant Chinese diplomatic missions by June 15th, 2004 so as to have these documents forwarded to the awardees.
